[Gnue-dev] Need a CVS-type install for stable versions

I downloaded the version 0.4 tarballs and would like to try to start some
projects using them.  I would like to install the tarballs and work on the
projects in /home/stan.  

It would help to have some equivalent of the CVS install program for doing
this.  Instead of working with the contents of CVS it would work with the
stable version in a directory where I put them and would let me specify
where to put the bin links and the etc files just as the CVS install does.
