[Gnue-dev] Re: Running applications from Navigator (Kernel Cousin #23)

In Kernel Cousin 23, the topic of running general shell commands from
Navigator is discussed (see below for quote).

I understand that Navigator is based on my business-process-oriented menu
system proposal. (Thanks to jcater for making happen what I wasn't able
to. :)

The intent of the proposal was *definitely* to include the ability to run
general commands and to pass parameters to those cammands. In particular
there are at least three purposes that general commands would be used for:

1. Viewing reports -- The actual command would depend on the report
format. This will probably expand to printing reports and doing other
post-processing such as mail-merges.

2. Getting program-specific help -- What the proposal envisions is
something like an HTML viewer with the help files contained in HTML files.
Picking a help topic sets the parameter and brings up the appropriate
file, pointed to the topic. These help files would be based on GNUe docs.
BTW, there is some material in the gcd files that is labeled "help" and
possibly should be integrated with this concept.

3. Accessing organizational policies related to specific business
processes -- These help files would need to be done by the organization.
Essentially, they represent the organization's policy manual. GNUe can
provide a skeleton, but these are very business process dependent. For
example, these files could specify the organization's policies regarding
when various transactions could be used (such as what the limit is for a
petty cash) or how the transactions need to be approved. They would also
be accessed by something like an HTML or pdf viewer.

16. Running applications from Navigator

Derek Neighbors (deke) asked "you mind if alter navigator?". He noted that
"you
define 'type' yet you always" start GNUe Forms. "I'm thinking we define in
gnue.conf runCommands for report, designer, forms, etc". James Thompson
said "i
added a type=app - where you can use any valid shell command". Derek found the
_runApp functionality, and commented "thats what you get for misleading
docs :)
" This was the cue for the usual round of 'Documentation? We have
doccumentation?' comments. Derek said he "would take a stab at" adding support
for the other GNUe tools - "unless you want to save it for arturas - should be
able to pretty much use the form code. The big problem is reports isnt full
fleshed out so its kind of a moving target - well i guess not too much".
