Details:

The SDSS imaging database can be queried for the images covering a certain
area at https://dr12.sdss.org/mosaics .

Once you fill the form, the full list of images that cover the desired area is
available in a shell script that can be downloaded from a URL like this:

https://dr12.sdss.org/mosaics/script?onlyprimary=True&pixelscale=0.396&ra=202.469583333&filters=gri&dec=47.1952777778&size=0.2

In this link, I have asked for a region that is centered on M51
(202.469583333, 47.1952777778), within a square box of size 0.2x0.2 degrees,
asking for the native pixel scale (0.396 arcsec/pixel), for the 'g', 'r' and
'i' band images.

>From the given shell script, we can extract the URLs and use cURL to download
the images. Ideally, we can also uncompress them (either by directly calling
'bz2', or using its library).
