Thanks for the nice review. Generally in astronomy data (the FITS standard
<https://fits.gsfc.nasa.gov/standard40/fits_standard40aa-le.pdf>), the World
Coordinate System (WCS, Section 8 of that paper, see references in the first
paragraph of that section) also has standards to define distortions
<https://www.atnf.csiro.au/people/mcalabre/WCS/dcs_20040422.pdf>.
