for context, this thread began last year

i dont think you will find many more opinions (neither for nor against) about
dotnet in the free software community - there is no important software in
distros for instance, which use it - it is used almost exclusively by
developers who either prefer to work on windows or for applications which
target windows primarily - that is not because it has any unique value as a
platform or language, but because it was imposed upon them as the lingua-franca
of windows development to replace their visual-basic platform - it is
cross-platform because its purpose was to compete with java; but i doubt that
it was used very much with that intention - java was very popular at that time;
but is not nearly as popular today - java is rarely discussed on this mailing
list either, for the same reason - there are very few examples of java software
which distros distribute

also FWIW, the original question "should it be discouraged?" did not really
belong on this mailing list - that question is more appropriate for the FSD -
in the context of this mailing list, it is only important if distros want to
distribute it, and if it has potential conflicts with the FSDG - i think the
original discussion did not go very far because few distros do distribute
dotnet; and those which do, probably would not miss it if it needed to be
deleted
