Apparently not an easy one. I can't think of the reliable algorithm to
detect it. Do you remember the case where 0 was the correct location?

Anyway, these days using SMS notifications should be a better way to
work for SMSD. It's not supported by gnapplet and by some rare AT
phones, but you could detect it by return code of the registration
(gnome-phone-manager does such thing). And it would be more efficient
way of retrieving messages.
