your gnokiirc looks ok, but you can have a [logging] section in .gnokiirc to 
enable debug messages:

[logging]

# libgnokii (on: stderr)
debug = on

# RLP subsystem (on: stderr)
rlpdebug = off

# xgnokii or smsd (on: stderr)
xdebug = on
