the cure was setting sm_retry = 1 in gnokiirc

note to the casual reader: read the docs before setting sm_retry = 1 or you 
may break the phone

so AT+CSQ works, and AT+CMGL works too but all messages have zeroed dates

because at lines 618, 623, 625 of common/data/at-emulator.c it should use 
sending tima in message->smsc_time instead of message->time which is valid 
only if message->type == GN_SMS_MT_DeliveryReport, right?

apart from these zeros, there is year 1905
