I should write here non-Linux-x86 systems. Sorry.

I looked deeper into it. And I'm still not sure where the problem lies.
Maybe some with deeper gcc knowledge will give a hint how to solve this.
Are there any platform that need -fPIC and other that discourage it?

As far as I understand the problem, it is that libpq (the one from
postgres) is compiled without -fPIC. Bradley, perhaps the current solution
for you is to do 'CFLAGS=-fPIC ./configure' on hppa and ia64 and
'./configure' on all other.
