Yes, I agree but when it comes to Trisquel GNU+Linux operating system it turns a lot more easy in the steps. This is really simple.

Even I decided to do same in 2005 with my old Celeron 600 MHz
computer, albeit I did not know about FSF, I only knew Red Hat at that
time, if you want some fun and real story, you should check out mine:

Point #1: I too have Radeon HD4250, on-board graphics. I can use
Desktop fine without any issues and some features are not available,
like HD playback which requires proprietary modules in kernal and
gNewSense is 100% Free Software and hence does not use any proprietary
software.

Point #2: changing to another Free distro will not solve your problem,
unless you are unlucky and it does solve the issue, that way you will
never know what the real problem was and that will come back and bite
you in the ass one day when ti comes to GNU/Linux :)

Your problem is whether your card Radeon 5700 (HD 5700 ? ,
external/on-board ?) is supported by Xorg Open-Source driver or not.
Do this at your command-line and tell me:

lspci | grep VGA

this is my output:

address@hidden ~]$ lspci | grep VGA
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
[AMD/ATI] RS880 [Radeon HD 4250]

You can check the codename of your card here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ati_gpu

and then check for Xorg support in FeatureMatrix:

https://www.x.org/wiki/RadeonFeature/

It may all seem very complicated to you at first comparing to your
Windows experience where you just pop-in the Windows CD/DVD and
install and then pop-in few more CDs for drivers and you are ready to
use your computer. When it comes to GNU/Linux the game is very
different but trust me it is all very, very simple once you start
understanding the basics.
