[gNewSense-users] HDMI port is not available

Subject: [gNewSense-users] HDMI port is not available
Date: Thu, 28 Nov 2013 01:35:10 -0200

Hi.

I'm using gNewSense 3 (amd64 with a 3.10.17 kernel) on a Sony Vaio VGN-NW270F laptop. This laptop uses a

I have a TV that I would like to use as secondary monitor, which used to work fine on other operating systems, including Parabola GNU/Linux and Windows.

On gNewSense, however, this HDMI port only mirrors what's on the main laptop screen, mapped to the top-left quarter of the TV, so not only I can't extend the desktop area, a huge part of my TV display is just unused.

Here's some information:

address@hidden:~$ uname -a
Linux gnewsense 3.10.17-gnu #1 SMP Fri Oct 18 21:30:39 UTC 2013 x86_64 GNU/Linux

address@hidden:~$ xrandr
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 1366 x 768, current 1366 x 768, maximum 1366 x 768
default connected 1366x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   1366x768        0.0*

So as you can see, HDMI1 isn't even detected.

I have tried using the intel driver directly instead of fbdev, but it simply wouldn't work. I tried that by creating the following file:

######## /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ ########
Section "Device"
    Identifier "Card0"
    Driver "intel"
EndSection

The result of that is that Xorg can't initialize, giving the following messages:

Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information.

I have no idea what to do / what could be wrong. It looks like xserver-xorg-video-intel just sits there and does nothing. This is its version, btw:

address@hidden:~$ aptitude show xserver-xorg-video-intel
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
State: installed
Automatically installed: yes
Version: 2:2.13.0-7
...

I think xserver-xorg-video-intel would do a better job at detecting the GPU capabilities that fbdev apparently misses (including basic stuff such as the HDMI video output). But, as you can see, Xorg won't start with it. So frustrating! :(

Please help! :(

Atenciosamente / Sincerely,
Guilherme Prá Vieira
