There is the recovery mode that can be entered from grub, at least in the
default setup.  I really haven't used it, but IIRC it will boot to a
shell login without X, so it may work just fine.  If you have a pretty
grub screen you may need to hit escape to get the boot list.

If you have grub locked down you'll need to know whatever information you
used when you set it up... though as long as root isn't encrypted you can
easily use a live CD to modify /boot/grub/menu.lst and remove a password.
