I regenerated the modules.dep file in /lib/modules/<kernel version>/
with depmod. After that everything works.

The issue with the original gNewSense kernel and LVM remains. Anybody
else experienced this? Not sure how this can be reproduced, and what to
write, if I have to file a bug report.
