Can you risk the install?  If so, I personally would be inclined to log
into a text console, fire up Aptitude, and tell it to remove gnome.
Before committing uninstallation, tell Aptitude to reinstall everything
of significance that you want back, which will probably prevent it from
actually uninstalling most of gnome.

Remember that I have not tested this myself (nor will I, as I don't have
access to spare installations with which to do so), and make no
guaranties about the efficacy or safety of this method.
