Because where the software is, there is also the license which makes the
software non-free. So letting him check for himself that this driver is
non-free sounds fair to me. I don't like leaving people in the dark.
This was catholicism, and we shouldn't do the same.

Because i was not sure if there was not a different driver for the
printer he already has. In my world printers are not free (the beery
"free"). So recommending buying different hardware should be sth like a
last solution.

I agree that this information would be useful. You should send an email,
then (or maybe you already did). But I don't agree that giving a link to
non-free software, accompanied with a remark about its status, is sth bad.
