I think that if this "ultra-orthodox" distro is really 100% free and Canonical plans to include it in every release cycle, then the community should focus its energy on it. While gNewSense is great and the goals have always been about Freedom, the gNewSense project possess far less resources than Canonical. If you are on this mailing list, you will probably use Free Software regardless of how "current" it is. But if wider Free Software adaptation is important to you, then Canonical's Free distro should be where to focus your energy. If you want new users to decide to use Free software, it would be better to offer them the latest kernel and all of the newer (Free)features. If a rational person were to sit down and try to make an economic decision about weather to use gNewSense1.1 or Ubuntu7.04, they might see that Ubuntu7.04 is far more recent and up to date as far as the kernel and other features. This person might see that fact as a benefit of using a non-free distro. However, if this fact did not exist anymore, it might cause more and more people to choose Free software. I do feel that Free software should not be about winning a popularity contest, however, if Free software can get a leg up like this, it is for the better.
