Okay, I've tried it in my desktop computer, and something different
happened - Nautilus popped up an automounted CDROM that offered some
Windows drivers... lol...

You said it was a USB card, and that pluging it in does nothing, and
no lights even come on. Since USB devices pull power from the port
itself, as long as the device is *working* and properly plugged in, it
should show _some_ activity.
