I do know ext3 journals.  I'm just uncertain how much that's necessary
for desktop use.  I have a laptop, so power outages aren't relevant, and
 GNU/Linux has never completely crashed on me (though X crashes
occasionally).

I don't think I would switch to ReiserFS because tools like parted have
such limited support for it.
