Follow-up Comment #3:

The system library has been in boost since version 1.35.0, and using it was
optional. Now other boost libraries depend on it, so it's now required. Since
it has been around since 1.35.0, it should be safe to make this a required
library. As I had additional boost changes in a branch, libchrono is now also
required as of 1.47.0 because of dependencies. Needed this library is now
version dependent. This modified patch is committed as of #9a5c31b.
