[Gm2] Why are the source files marked as executable?

Why are so many (if not most) source files marked as executable in the  
git archive?  For example, here is a bit of the gm2-compiler directory:

-rwxr-xr-x CLexBuf.def
-rwxr-xr-x CLexBuf.mod
-rw-r--r-- FifoQueue.c
-rwxr-xr-x FifoQueue.def
-rwxr-xr-x FifoQueue.mod
-rwxr-xr-x Indexing.def
-rwxr-xr-x Indexing.mod

I meant to ask this earlier.
