Could you elaborate a bit by what you mean by user autonomy?

Do you mean free from hardware vendors?  Doesn't this "just" require
good documentation?

Do you mean free from network-based services?  Isn't this the aim of
the AGPL?

Do you mean free from the infrastructure providers, by which I mean
not being dependent on your data plan provider?  (This is part of my
motivation for Woodchuck--http://www.gnu.org/ghm/2011/paris/#sec-2-19)

Or, do you mean something else?
