[gfsd]'configure' scripts don't work

any script generated by autoconf (i used to install m4, autoconf, automake)
stopped with error messages like the following (from m4 install):

:unknown command
:unknown command
:unknown command
:unknown command
:unknown command
'/configure: line 47: syntax error near unexpected token 'do
'/configure: line 47: 'do

i never changed anything in the scripts. it is not only with the script from
m4, but with any other i tried, containing the hint that it was generated
with
autoconf. i run SuSE linux 6.3 and version bash-2.03(0).i386. where is the
problem? I am now searchin for about four days to resolve this problem. 
i downloaded a patch of  bash (7), but nothin changed. It would be nice if
you could give me a hint.
