Hmmm...
Can you verify if your gcmd version recognizes new added devices at all ? Like,
open a terminal and mount some partition. Immediately, a new device icon should
pop up in the gcmd.
I guess pmount is only providing the authority issues, not the actual
automounting daemon service (finally just some rules added to udev.) I'm not
gonna install it just to check...

usbmount is merely a simple script stuffed into /etc/udev/rules.d, and you
could probably even copy and insert just this rule.
But if you wanted to install the small package, it depends on lockfile-progs
(which depends on liblockfile1) and util-linux, which probably is useful on any
linux. You should be able to install from usbmount.alioth.debian.org (binary
tarball or sources).
