OK here is the backport to 2.6.6, also posted to the errata page on
the gcl website.  Works for me, please let me know if not for you.


Suddenly out of the blue I discovered that I can't build
GCL 2.6.6 (even pure 2.6.6 without errata patches). GCL CLtL
seems to be OK, ANSI flavor builds but segfaults on almost
every action.  I'm investigating which of my recent
updates broke GCL.

After some digging I've found the problem.  The trouble is
with new make with some fresh patches from make's cvs.
I'm really surprised, and I still don't understand how
make could possible break GCL build in such strange fashion.
More details a bit later.
