Greetings!

Yes, if any software required for building GCL is in non-standard
locations, like apparently /sw on your machine, you can deal with this
by setting various PATH variables before config:

export PATH=/sw/bin:$PATH
export C_INCLUDE_PATH=/sw/include:$C_INCLUDE_PATH (?)
export LIBRARY_PATH=/sw/lib:$LIBRARY_PATH (?)
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/sw/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH (?)

If this pulls in a new gcc, you can either 

export CC=<path to old gcc>

or export GCC_EXEC_PREFIX=<new_path....>/gcc-lib/

Then just configure and make as usual.  

Due to the great assistance of Aurelien, our GCL macosx guy, this is
supposed to work now out of the box.
