OK - this might be part of the answer.  There are two instances of
libiberty.a - one associated with gcc in 
and another one from binutils in /usr/lib/libiberty.a
>From a few posts on the internet it seems like there is some
functionality in the binutils version not defined in the gcc version. 
How we teach gcl to look for the binutils version I have no idea.
