Hmmm.  OK, here's everything, from the first configure through make,
and then just for good measure I do a make clean and make again, which
seems to produce a different error.  Here are all the versions of
everything relevant I can find:

gcc3.2.2
readline
m4
tk
tex
texinfo
binutils
texi2html
autoconf
automake
gettext
