Here are the libs in binutils-dev on Debian:

/usr/lib/libbfd.a
/usr/lib/libiberty.a
/usr/lib/libopcodes.a
/usr/lib/libbfd.so
/usr/lib/libopcodes.so

On some Debian arches, but not all, iberty was needed to provide some
malloc-like herlper functions. Can you do a 'nm --dynamic' on your
shared libs and find where bfd_init is? And then try to see if you
can link a program like this?

int
main() {
bfd_init();
}

What libs do you need to do this on your systems?

take care,
