Dear All,

The CETA panic continues in Brussels….

The INTA, trade committee of the European parliament has today decided that the parliamentary ratification vote will now be held in December (exact date unknown).  The main culprit for this obscene haste is Scots Labour MEP David Martin who went against the expectations of many within his own S&D political group in Brussels and pushed  for an early vote without the inconvenience of resolutions or opinions from other EP Committees.

This denial of democracy and scrutiny should be roundly condemned. There is a chance this could anger a few with doubts about CETA. The latest is Luxembourg who have a Green government and are currently wobbling about the deal.

The parliamentary process over the coming weeks is:

1. Monitoring group of CETA / End of October - this will be a closed door meeting with the Rapporteur and Shadows.

2. Exchange of views / 9-10 November - This will take place in  INTA, thus live streamed, the MEPs will discuss the draft Pabriks report in order to offer guidance

3. Exchange of views with national Parliament / Lunch debate on 29 November - A closed door lunch debate. This is insane  how can anyone expect a real debate when they need to pass the salt to another person?!

4. Consideration of draft recommendation / 29 November - same day as the lunch with the national parliaments (!) live stream

5. Deadline for amendments /30 November - INTA MEPs will have one day to table amendments, they normally have couple weeks between the consideration and the tabling of amendments

(pasted from an email from Cecile Toubeau (Dir. Better Trade and Regulation)

So, ratification is now set for this year, however, things can get delayed in the EU….

More when I find out!
