Last month the Samba team released Samba 4.0 which is the first release
in which Samba can take on the full role of an "Active Directory
Compatible Server". Pre-release versions have been around for a while
but now it is officially released. Very useful if you are trying
extricate your office from Microsoft.

Although the article doesn't stress it, you can have Free Software
clients use the Samba server(s) for shares and login auth.
