Hi all,

There's a talk on 2nd December (this Thursday) that might be of interest
to several of us:

=======

* This meeting is free and open to all *
** Please forward this email to colleagues who may be interested **

Thursday 2nd December 2010, Refreshments from 6pm, Talk 6.30pm Towards
Super-Fast Broadband
Speaker: Dr George Williamson, Director of Strategic Network Design,
Openreach
Organiser: IET Manchester Network
Venue: Manchester Conference Centre, Sackville Street, M1 3BB
Directions: http://www.manchesterconferencecentre.co.uk/location/

The UK telephone network was originally designed and optimised for the
delivery of voice services to our homes. That requirement was modified
in the 1990s with a desire to connect PCs to the Internet and today, the
demand is for super fast broadband to support our ever increasing thirst
for multimedia and real time web services. The access network has
therefore evolved from providing analogue voice to high bandwidth
digital services. Yet, the wires connecting our homes are in the main
still copper twisted pair.

This lecture will examine how the domestic access network has changed
over the years and how the technical challenges of today are now being
met with fibre to the cabinet and fibre to the home solutions.

=======

I'm going to suggest that those who want to attend this talk do so, and
then we all decamp to a the nearby venue of the Lass O'Gowrie (our
original home for those of you who remember!) for a Christmas pint from
about 7.45pm.

We may decamp to Retro if Lass O'Gowrie is packed/got a thing on/is
showing footie. Those of you who want to get drunk will end up there
anyway, and you know it...

I, being a dour and bitter man, will be drinking lemonade all night
whilst tutting at you all under my breath before departing to retire
before 10pm. Maybe.

Hope to see you all then.
