This is only news because the company involved is Microsoft.  Having
the code in the Linux source trees gives them a competitive advantage
for their virtualisation software over others (e.g. VMWare).  It's a
driver for making Linux work better when virtualised under Microsoft's
operating system using Microsoft's software so it doesn't really help
Linux in any way unless you believe it needs some kind of acceptance
from Microsoft.  And releasing it under the GPL? well anything else
would be a license violation.
