Hi,

Can anyone tell me the major differences between GPL 2, 3 and the
Lesser GPL please?

Hi Aidy,

Briefly, version 3 of the GPL and LGPL is broadly the same as version
2 but closes some loopholes that were starting to become an issue,
notably patent protection and tivoisation.

The following has a good summary of the changes:
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/quick-guide-gplv3.html

The LGPL license allows software to become incorporated with software
under other licenses (inc proprietary). It was developed as a
compromise to allow free software libraries to become more widely
used.

This page has a good summary of the LGPL and explains why it isn't
always such a good idea: http://www.gnu.org/licenses/why-not-lgpl.html

Hi Aidy

Good advice from Lucy. Its worth checking out http://www.gnu.org/licenses/ which is the overview page for GNU license info. For a description of tivoisation see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tivoisation which exposes the controversy over the issue.

Can I ask where your interest comes from? Are you thinking what license to use for your code? Or just interested?

M.
