You didn't have operator status to change the topic because the channel isn't
+t, which is the Freenode channel mode for topic lock.
You had operator status because you always _do_ in the channels you run and the
person in question was quite rightly pointing out that this goes against the
Freenode channel guidelines. [1]
That you kicked him for questioning you was unnecessary and mean spirited.
