Sadly this isn't a great shock:

Stockport, on the other hand, has rolled out a borough-wide FOSS schools system
based on Plone, I think (but otherwise is hardly a Mecca for Free Software so
don't get too excited).

If you are a resident in Manchester you could:
- Contact your local councillor via http://www.writetothem.com (itself an
excellent example of how Free Software can deliver excellent IT whilst slashing
the costs - the PM's petition site is another example by the same people).

- Contact your local MP, also via http://www.writetothem.com

- Contact your local MEP.

- Ask why Manchester is doing cozy deals with Microsoft at the same time as the
EC and the European courts have found them guilty of illegal monopolistic
practices.

- Contact the local political parties in your area (Labour, Tory, Lib Dem,
Green) and find out what their view are (if any - it's not exactly a mainstream
political issue so most people simply won't have thought about it or know about
it).

- Come along to the Open Schools Alliance conference on Free and Open Source
Software in Liverpool next Friday and invite the people you contact to come
along too.

Iain.
