I missed a trick: why is this only about free software like Linux? Aren't all software-using and especially software-developing organisations (like in-house database form software even) in danger?

Yes, all are in danger that don't hold the patent or have a license agreement for the patents.

Even Microsoft has to pay several billion dollars every year in patent royalties and actions in courts....
