For some reason it does not work to use NS1.FR.FSF.ORG. Additionaly
I think devnull might have ideas on this subject. For instance it might
be best to call it ns2.gnu.org.

What is meant by ``it does not work''? I assume you got an error
message somewhere? Telling me what that error message is would help
me to understand within which space I should start guessing wildly.

It might be that the registrars don't like as many levels of
subdomains as there are in ns1.fr.fsf.org. It might be that to have
another nameserver whose hostname is in gnu.org we need to get Thomas
to register that host with NSI first. It could be something
completely different.

I'd originally proposed ns1.fsffrance.org, but I'm not sure if I have
strong feelings as to whether we use the name ns1.fsffrance.org or
ns2.gnu.org. In a way, I like the descriptiveness that comes from
ns1.fsffrance.org. ns2.gnu.org has the advantage in theory that if we
suddenly wanted to replace the nameserver in france with a nameserver
in the US, we could just change the IP address of ns2.gnu.org sending
a single form to the appropriate registrar, and that would take care
of all the domains; otherwise, we'd have to change the list of
nameservers on each domain. However, it seems unlikely to me that
we'd happen to have a new nameserver that we'd want to use at exactly
the same time we'd need to move off of the nameserver in France, so
that strikes me as probably a non-issue.
