RMS had an awesome analogy based upon the concept of cooking recipes and how people share them and make changes. Some people make a change that changes the dish for the better and might want to see those changes :)

When I'm speaking about Free Software it's easier, because people usually pay attention for an explanation about the real sense of it. Therefore I speak about the terminology deeper, speaking sometimes technically why only Linux is wrong and sometimes ethically.
