This is actually another question I suppose. What are the sizes I'm
specifying when I make a size request? Somehow they must relate to the
final size but I'm not sure how. Perhaps this is all that I'm missing.

I don't need an exact size, nor do I need to worry about glyphs that go
beyond a typical bounding box. I'm interested only in the typical
metrics. If you're saying there is no such thing then fine, it means I
have to render the glyphs twice.
