I'll look into it.  Have you ever considered to use KAKUGAWA
Hirotsugu's VFlib?  Using this package in combination with his TeX-guy
library (for DVI and graphics support) he was able to write a full DVI
driver with 140 lines of C code.

Hirotsugu plans to update VFlib soon to use FT 2.  It would be very
nice if this framework becomes more widespread...
