Follow-up Comment #1, bug #37800 (project freeipmi):
Many newer Supermicro systems have a firmware bug in which the checksum of
response packets in calculated incorrectly.
When FreeIPMI software sees a packet with invalid checksums, it tosses the
packet assuming it is corrupted.
Newer, although possibly not yet published on Supermicro's website, firmwares
are confirmed to fix this. In the meantime, the newest FreeIPMI supports a
"nochecksumcheck" workaround to get around the problem.
I cannot speak for IPMIView, but ipmitool does not check the checksum of
response packets, which is why it happens to work.
