There's a lot of great AJAX _javascript_ libraries that let's me keep the simplicity of the client-side code and at the same time harness the raw power of a generic handler.
Sure, Google search would still be popular, but the money and effort poured into Friendster would have dragged the stock price down.

ie, you can get in Google's Blog Search unless you have a feed. The slow performance occurs when you do multiple calls on the same page.
