If ithad ever been level, it was no longer so. The
sand in the creek bed, however, was disappointingly solid. Also I have an absorbing
desire to see what isgoing to happen to you.
Did youthink youd get away with this so
easy?
Rocks roll down thecliffs and floods roar down the
washes. But Janey, weak as she was, stood up to the blaze, extending cold trembling
hands.
No doubt the similarity of our ride to theirs ends
rightthere. I note youve given mea plug of a horse that probably never ran in its
life. Thunderand lightning, however, made her nervous, even indoors.
And the revelation of her true self to Randolph
would beall the sweeter.
But it must be something overwhich a modern girl
could safely lose her nerve.
I asked you whom these horses belonged
to?
She missed the pommel with her handand the stirrup
with her foot, and fell flat.
Is this supposed to be a movie or a leg show? When
her horse was ready she turned to Randolph. Randolph halted his horse and turned to
look.
When he finally reached thesummit he was red-faced
and panting. Randolph jumpeddown off the bank to the slope, which was several feet
under the level.
Certainly he could not haveplanned such
opportunities as had come up.
Surefoot had an easy trot, for which Janey was
devoutly thankful. Then he turned his back tothe fire, and stood that way for a long
time.
