Hi everybody,
I found a site which has some information on the history and foundations
of mathematics. It can be found at:
http://www.math.tamu.edu/~dallen/masters/index.htm
<http://www.math.tamu.edu/%7Edallen/masters/index.htm>. I used some of
the info from the site for the intro to the numbers chapter. I have
asked for and received permission to use the content on the site.
Mark, I hope you don't mind me using your email to Tony Kuphaldt as a
boilerplate..:).

Subject: Permission to use notes on history of mathematics...
Dear Prof. Allen,
I am involved in a project which aims to boost education in South
Africa by reducing the cost of science textbooks. The availability
of text books is a real problem area and we have documentation to
back it up if you are interested. Our project page is at:
http://www.nongnu.org/fhsst.
I would like to use some of the content in your "History of
Mathematics"
book as introductions to the various chapters within the book. I
don't intend to copy them verbatim but I would like to paraphrase
some of the content (for example, the history of numbers and
counting would be a good introduction for the Numbers chapter of
the book).
We want to publish our content under the GNU Free Documentation
License.
Our primary objective is to create books which are specific to the
SA syllabus as fast as possible. We have no intention of trying to
make money off the books, we are primarily trying to boost
education in Southern Africa which is stable for the first time.
See the following presentation for some startling facts
(http://www.nongnu.org/fhsst/ALMSAConference.pdf).
Would you be prepared to help us out by allowing us to use some of
your content? It would be a major help for us and we'll definitely
give credit to you as a contributor.
Yours sincerely,
Sanya Rajan
