Hi Lynn

Great! About the brief - I have no clue what details you would need from me. So here goes:

Target audience: 16-18 year olds (what a scary thought!)
We need them to start off not thinking we are old farts
also not thinking we are not competent.

The covers will be the only colour parts of the books. Everything will be in black and white to reduce printing costs but the covers will be full-colour. We need 3 - one for each of Maths, Chemistry and Physics.

The books will be (most probably - but extremely likely) B5 in size and bound with perfect binding. We estimate about 200 pages per book. So now you have some ideas about sizes.

Other than the obvious facts that the covers must be related to the subject you can have absolutely free reign. Maybe pick one and throw a few ideas together and we'll give you feedback. I think it might be good if there is some similar theme or scheme or something between them ... just so they do look like a set - but nothing too rigid and boring.

So now you have a vague and not very helpful brief - go wild and we'll try to restrain you if we thinks its too much :)

If you want to discuss things or get quick feedback you can meet with Spencer Wheaton and Rory Adams (I will warn them) and they can discuss things with you rather than waiting for email messages. Claire knows how to get hold of them and they are both on campus (UCT) and live near Claire so meeting shouldn't be too hard.

Spencer - 083 6262 055
        - 650 3366 (office)
Rory - 082 940 7802
        - 650 3344 (office)

Right so if thats good enough to start then tell me what you think and we can come up with a timeline - it would be nice to have something by the end of March/mid-April.

Thanks a lot for the help!

I added the monthly update below if you still have any reading stamina and are interested - I mentioned you.

Mark

Hi all

February was quite rough but went well. I am gonna need a long holiday
when this is all over :)

Things are looking good on the whole, we need to start putting chemistry
together as physics is coming along nicely. Here is a summary of what
happened in February.

Milestones:
- 250 pages (not a real milestone but pretty cool nonetheless)
- Delivered 5 physics chapter to PGSE students for editing
- Algebra, differentiation and trigonometry are all progressing
     nicely
- Chemisty is also coming along nicely we need to get the rest of
     the contributions in.

Events
- We were contacted by Warrick Selzer who owns a publishing business
in Gauteng. His business includes print-on-demand services.
We need to start working on a budget and distribution plan.
Warwick sent us some details and for a B5 200 page perfect bound
book it will cost R38. This will be our upper limit as we can
reduce this by doing a lithographic print. We will send him a
draft of physics soon and he will print us a sample.

New members and help
- Marcus Gulver joined and has started working on a new website and
     logo for the project.
- Clare Johnson has agreed to help edit maths and
might contribute some sections of trig.
- Helen Seals has joined up and will be helping
     finish off physics.
- Ismail Akhalwaya has joined and is interested in contributing to
     maths.
- Lynn Greeff has expressed interest in helping and she is going to be
working on the covers for the books.
- Marcus Oldenburg has agreed to help and he will consider working on
starting the properties of matter chapter.
- Mark Gilbert also joined and he will be helping with editing.
- Brett Cocks has joined and is helping by writing a chemistry
     chapter.

Requests to all of you
- Can we get outstanding contributions in.
- Essay help - if you know someone who could write an essay
please let me know - engineers, pilots, doctors ... anyone
who uses science - the essay only needs to be 1 A4 page.
I will have an example up within a week.
- Recruit if you can - many hands make light work!

Priorities for March
- Complete physics
- Get final drafts of contributions to maths and chem
- Rough draft of distribution plan
- Explore potential legal aspects in more detail

Hope everyone is well!

Cheers

Mark
