Dear Joe,
currently this is "only" possible with the constraint command. I write only, 
just because a concept of spacial constraints and an external potential are 
different things, and should in my opinion be separated. Anyway, if you take 
the rod constraint it is the implementation of the log(r) potential that 
charged objects feel next to an infinitely long charged rod, that is 
proportional to the charge.
I although hidden behind the concept of constraint, this is what you mean.
It is not difficult to implement more "external potentials" (as I would call 
it) in a similar way. If you need assistance, just send a Mail.
