I have noticed something similar, and I think it is a regression. I
compared the behavior of a stock 21.3 emacs I compiled from the 21.3
source tarball with the behavior of a 21.3.50.1 emacs I compiled from a
CVS checkout (head of the tree) yesterday (5/18/04). Both versions were
compiled with default options on a RedHat Linux 9 system. In both cases
I ran emacs -q and then M-x windmove-default-keybindings before testing
windmove. To test windmove I simply divided the screen into 4 panes and
tried to move between them.
With emacs-21.3, I can move in all directions with no problem, as with
prior versions of emacs.
With emacs-21.3.50.1, I can move up, down, and left, but not right (right
gives the error message "no window right from selected window"). By
setting windmove-window-distance-delta to 4 or higher I can work around
the problem and move freely in all 4 directions. Based on the
documentation for windmove-window-distance-delta, and commentary in
windmove.el, it seems this variable should not need to be set on recent
versions of emacs.
Thanks to all who work to maintain emacs!
