Hi Richard,
Do you like the example file http://dapfy.bei.t-online.de/compilation.txt I'd
included? In a way this is the non-technical documentation which illustrates
compilation-error-regexp-alist. I would like this to reside under etc/. Is
there a way it could be hyperlinked from the Help buffer or automatically
displayed with the Customization buffer? Or should I write a command to visit
it and refer to that?

I had done that with version 0.14. Only, additionally the first page contains
my coments and the last two pages contain the fixes to grep and diff-mode. The
rest in between is what the finished compile.el will look like.
As this is about complete now (http://dapfy.bei.t-online.de/compile.el v0.20),
I'm starting to wonder how to submit this. A diff of compile.el would be much
bigger than just the file itself. For grep and diff-mode the diffs would be
fairly small.
I think it would be better to get the finished things integrated asap, and fix
the other affected libraries afterwards. That way there'd be a sound basis
which I could submit this week. Else it'll be second january week...
merry christmas
