Can you determine whether the shell is outputting these ^A and ^B
characters?
Francesco, do you see anything in the change logs that might account
for this? I don't, but I haven't updated since 4 Dec.
I suspect that the shell is outputting them, and I wonder if
something has changed in either the terminfo settings that Emacs tells
the shell to use, or some environment variable that controls the shell's
behavior.
