I can also reproduce this bug:
https://emacs.stackexchange.com/questions/64021/headings-in-org-mode-unexpected-behavior

After setting `org-hide-emphasis-markers' back to nil (the default), it goes 
away.

Perhaps that's helpful for fixing it.
